What is a blue flag?

A blue flag is a special recognition awarded by the European Foundation for Environmental Education to beaches that meet certain quality standards of their waters, security, general services and environment management. Nevertheless, just because a beach does not have this flag, it doesn’t mean that the quality of its water is not adequate, only that it did not score high enough in either of the criteria, so it could be that it does not meet one of the requirements, such as easy accessibility for people with reduced mobility, the existence of a lifeguard station, service offer…

In order for this private foundation to award a blue flag it is compulsory that each town makes a formal request for its beaches to be valued. For this reason, many excellent quality beaches on the island and of other Spanish and European destinations have not been awarded it at the express wish of the town where the beach sits. Therefore, take into account that:

  1. A blue flag is not an institutional distinctive (as it’s awarded by a private Foundation).
  2. The awarding of this flag only guarantees the compliance of a package of requirements.
  3. Its absence does not mean that a particular beach is not recommendable.
