Families with a baby or toddler (0–3 years old)

The essentials: enough boot space for a pushchair and a suitable child seat for ages 0–3. A compact SUV offers the best balance between interior space and easy driving on Ibiza’s roads. The boot of an SUV can comfortably fit a pushchair, beach bags and a cool box.

Families with school-age children (4–12 years old)

Here, passenger space becomes the key factor. Children need room to move around, and journeys of 30–40 minutes between beaches are far more comfortable with a spacious back row. We recommend medium-sized cars such as the Ford Focus, Mercedes Citan or Seat Arona. If you prefer extra space, a larger SUV or people carrier is ideal. And if you are travelling with more than two children, take into consideration a family van: everyone travels comfortably and luggage is never an issue.

Families with teenagers

Teenagers bring their own luggage (often bigger than yours) and appreciate having their own personal space. A large SUV works very well for a family of four. If you are five or more, a van is usually the most sensible choice.

Child seats: segulations and options

Spanish law requires children under 135 cm tall to use an approved child restraint system, this also applies to hire cars. It’s the law in Ibiza just as anywhere else in Spain, and local police carry out checks regularly, especially during peak season.

• Group 0: 0–12 months (up to 13 kg): rear-facing infant carrier. Essential for newborns.
• Group 1: 8 months–4 years (9–18 kg): child seat with five-point harness.
• Group 2: 3–7 years: booster seat with backrest using the vehicle’s seatbelt.
• Group 3: 6–12 years: booster cushion without a backrest using the vehicle’s seatbelt.

Cala Bassa: shallow water and fine sand make it feel like a natural swimming pool. There is a large car park, although it is best to arrive before midday as it becomes very busy in summer. Tip: bring your own parasol.

Cala Llonga: plenty of sand for children to play on and calm, shallow water ideal for learning to swim. There are affordable sunbeds and parasols, as well as an attractive promenade with ice cream parlours and shops.

Cala de San Vicente: another excellent choice for children to play, swim and enjoy the beach. There are restaurants, shops and a very family-oriented atmosphere.

Cala Llenya: one of the favourite beaches among families thanks to its relaxed atmosphere, authentic beach bar and spacious sandy beach. Parking is available nearby.

Things to do with children beyond the beach

Aquarium Cap Blanc (Sant Antoni): a former lobster hatchery transformed into a small natural aquarium inside a sea cave. Simple but fascinating for discovering local marine life. Easy to combine with a beach day at Cala Gració.

Santa Gertrudis: perhaps the most charming inland village in Ibiza. Artisan ice cream parlours, open squares where children can run around while parents enjoy a coffee, and plenty of little interesting shops. Easy parking and perfect for the evening.

Coastal defence towers: Ibiza’s historic watchtowers provide a fun mini adventure for children. For example, from Ses Salines beach you can walk through the pine forest to Torre de Ses Portes, while Platges de Comte and Playa d’en Bossa also have nearby towers worth visiting.

Can Muson: an eco farm-school where children and adults can discover traditional Ibiza farming (they have farm animals that you can feed) and local products. A great family activity that pairs perfectly with a visit to Cala Llonga.

A five-seater vehicle in high season generally ranges from around 55€ per day for the most economical models to 165€ per day for premium vehicles such as the Mercedes GLB.
