What are the vehicle restrictions in Ibiza, and how will they affect in 2026?
This summer, a new vehicle limitation regulation has been activated in Ibiza applicable from 1st June to 30th September in a bid to promote sustainability. If you are coming on holiday this summer, find out if you are affected and how to apply for authorisation.
Following the example of other European islands like Formentera, Ibiza is adopting this restrictive measure aimed at curbing the influx of vehicles and traffic during the summer season—levels that have risen significantly in recent years. Do you think this might affect you? Are you planning to rent a car in Ibiza this summer? Below, we answer the key questions regarding vehicle restrictions on the island.
What will be the limitation of cars and caravans in Ibiza?
This regulation applies to visitors arriving on the island by boat, owners of second homes who keep a car there year-round, and vehicle rental companies. A daily quota of 17,668 authorizations has been established; of these, 3,548 are reserved for visitors arriving in Ibiza by ferry with their own vehicles and for non-residents who keep a vehicle on the island. The remainder is allocated to vehicle rental companies. Motorcycles are exempt from this restriction this year, so if you plan to come to Ibiza on a motorcycle, no action is required on your part.
Vehicle limitation in Ibiza for car hire: will it affect me?
The regulation does not affect the users of car hire companies, but rather the companies themselves, which will not be able to increase their fleet or exceed the quota of vehicles already allocated. It should not, therefore, affect availability or rates, except perhaps on certain peak demand dates, such as certain summer holidays or weekends.

What do I need to do if I am going to travel to Ibiza with my car?
From this summer, all drivers wishing to disembark with their car in Ibiza from the ports of Barcelona, Denia, Valencia or Palma between the 1st of June and the 30th of September must obtain authorisation.
Steps to request authorisation for car access to Ibiza 2026
- Buy your boat ticket with your chosen shipping company. If at the time of making your reservation for the chosen dates the vehicle quota is full, the shipping company will notify you so that you can choose other dates. During the booking process with your shipping company, you will be given a reservation for your entry to Ibiza with a car.
- If the ticket is a return ticket, the authorisation process will be carried out by the shipping company. The compulsory road tax for visitors’ vehicles is €1/day.
- If the ticket is a one-way ticket, you will have to carry out the authorisation process through Ibizacircular.es, the official website set up by the Consell Insular de Ibiza (Island Council of Ibiza) to manage vehicle entry authorisations. It is already operational in Spanish, Catalan and English.
Frequently asked questions about travelling by car to Ibiza in 2026
Will I be able to visit Ibiza with my car this year?
Yes, as long as the quota of vehicles circulating on the island of Ibiza has not been exceeded for the dates of your trip.
Have a second home in Ibiza, does the limitation affect me?
The new regulations regulate the circulation, not the entry itself. Therefore, all those vehicles that have entered before 1st June and are not tax resident on the island of Ibiza will have to reserve the corresponding quota or justify their exemption.
I have to travel to Ibiza for work, do I also have to register on the platform?
Yes, unless you are a tax resident on the islands of Menorca, Mallorca or Formentera. Visit the Ibiza Circular website and get an exemption just by presenting your work contract.
Do I have to book a space if I am only passing through Ibiza on a stopover to Formentera?
LVehicles in transit to/from Formentera are exempt from obtaining authorisation as long as their journey continues in the direction of the neighbouring island. Please note that Formentera has its own vehicle control process, so you will have to apply for authorisation at https://formentera.eco
Which vehicles are exempt from requesting authorization?
The following vehicles do not require any application process or fee payment:
- Passenger cars with their tax domicile in Ibiza.
- Official or public service vehicles.
- Vehicles used for freight transport, commercial distribution, and agricultural or construction machinery.
- Leased or rented vehicles: If the holder is an Ibiza resident, these are treated exactly the same as owned vehicles (proof of the contract and the link to the holder must be provided via the Consell’s electronic office).
