Hiking in Ibiza: the route of Ses Portes
One of the most pleasant walks is this route through the Natural Park of Ses Salines. With a low difficulty that makes it suitable for all types of travellers, this round trip has an extension of 4 km in length and allows you to discover intimate hidden coves, capricious rock formations and the most stalky defense tower raised on the Ibiza coast: Ses Portes. One more reason for you not to forget the trainers at home and you hike in Ibiza 🙂
Ses Salines – Ses Portes Tower
The route starts in the car park enabled on the beach of Ses Salines. At its northern edge, just past the fence that cuts access to the vehicles, there are two trails. You have to take the one on your right. The road is not lost, as you always stay within the path, that meanders among the hundreds of pine trees, sabines and scrubland that make up the Mediterranean forest. When the vegetations disappears, and a litter after passing an old well, takes on the role the tower of Ses Portes, that already appears at the end of the road. This tower was raised at the end of the XVI century and, besides the tower of Es Carregador, in Playa d´en Bossa, defended the Es Freus channel and protected the valuable Salinas. From this point you can see a fantastic panoramic view over the beach of Es Cavallet, the distant profile of Dalt Vila, Formentera and the islets that make up the so-called Es Freus Channel.
Where to eat after the hiking route
At this point you can undo the path and return on our steps direction the car park, or continue by the coast to the seashore of Ses Salines. There is no track, but the tour is simple and very entertaining because the coast at this point shows curious limestone formations modeled by the erosion of sea. If it is warm, it´s always possible to cool of in some of the coves that appear through the way or to wait till you arrive to the Salinas beach itself, with its incredible turquoise waters. Out of season, the tour can finish with a nice picnic on the beach. Or if you fancy eating with table and tablecloth, you can go to La Escollera, in the nearby Es Cavallet or the Bar San Francisco on the road to Ses Salines. In both cases, they open in low season as well.
