Puig de Missa

it is definitely one of Ibiza’s most important monumental complexes. It is located at the top of a cliff (this is where it gets its name from, as “puig” means “cliff” in Catalan), and it stands out for being one of the island’s best church-fortress examples. Like all of the island’s buildings of this type, it has wide walls and barely any windows, a bastion –which in the past used to have two bronze cannons-, the veranda and the vicar’s home. It is worth going around the whole complex to admire its cubic shapes and walking around the small and intimate adjacent cemetery.

Ibiza’s Ethnographic Museum

Just 200 metres away from Puig de Missa’s church, there is another unmissable place to visit in Santa Eulària des Riu. It is located at Can Ros, a very old traditional house that is over 300 years old and which was declared to be a Site of Cultural Interest. This museum offers a complete ethnographic collection and it enables you to learn about Ibiza’s unique rural architecture features, which have been admired by many famous architects such as Le Corbusier, Erwin Broner and Josep Lluís Sert.

Sala Barrau

This exhibition hall is a tribute to Laureà Barrau i Buñol which is a Catalan painter who lived in town during the 1930s and 1940s and fell in love with the light, colours and traditions of Ibiza. His paintings and drawings are the perfect reflection of what the island was like before it became popular among tourists.

What to do in Santa Eulària des Riu?

As well as visiting the suggested enclaves, in Santa Eulària des Riu you will be able to have a nice drink on one of the terraces of the promenade, the marina or the main boardwalk; you will also be able to have a taste of traditional Ibizan cuisine at Ca na Ribes restaurant, follow the auto-guided route which follows the course of the only river in Ibiza or go to Punta Arabí’s hippy market that takes place in Summer at Es Canar, a nearby tourist centre.
